Hard Hat Hits High Gear

October 18, 2018

The walls are up, window glass is placed and the roof is on. But what's going on inside the new North wing at NorthBay Medical Center? If you haven't been on the Fairfield campus in a while, you might be surprised to see such progress on the new three-story structure that has been under construction since 2015.

Construction is set to be completed in 2019, with the facility expected to be ready to care for patients by summer.

Curious about what can be found in the new building? The Hard Hat Report will detail it all in the coming months.

Here's a sneak peek into what is included in the 70,000-square-foot-facility:

  • The first floor is home to a new kitchen, café with indoor and outdoor seating, diagnostic imaging to include a CT scanner, two ultrasound rooms and a combined and mammography/ultrasound room, fluoroscopy and a Gamma Camera, and a central sterile processing department.
  • The second floor, named 2 North, will feature 22 new state-of-the-art patient rooms, four nurses' stations, a waiting room with televisions and tracking monitors, equipment storage rooms, clean and dirty supply rooms, and two treatment rooms.
  • The third floor is equipped with six surgical suites: a hybrid operating room, two general operating rooms, two surgical suites devoted to trauma and neuro cases, and a CVOR suite. The floor also has a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit with 16 beds. Four are for pre-op use, 11 for post-surgical use and one for isolation.
  • The hybrid operating room is equipped with a Phaeno device, technology so advanced it was only recently approved by the FDA. Only a few other facilities in California have this equipment, which is a robotic arm that provides real-time imaging during surgeries.
  • The utility plant next to the wing is receiving a new generator and cooling tower to support the expansion.
  • There are four elevators in the new wing. One is a high-speed elevator that moves patients quickly up from the Emergency Department to just outside the trauma suite; one is strictly for dirty supplies and another for clean supplies.
